Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

• History: Established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Department of Wildlife Conservation, the orphanage began with just five baby elephants that had been orphaned in the wild.

• Purpose: The main goal is to care for orphaned, injured, and abandoned elephants, providing them with a safe environment, medical care, and proper nutrition.

• Size & Herd: Today, Pinnawala hosts one of the largest captive elephant herds in the world, with dozens of elephants including calves born at the sanctuary.

1. Elephant Feeding:

   • Guests can watch baby elephants being bottle-fed with milk.

   • Adult elephants are fed fruits and other special diets.

2. River Bathing:

   • Twice a day, elephants are led to the nearby Ma Oya River for bathing.

3. Observing Herd Life:

   • The orphanage allows close observation of elephant behavior, such as social bonding, play, and care for young ones.
